Dear Netflix,

What a long ...long relationship we have shared you and I. There was a time you made life easier for me and saved me from those "Oh, did you return the movie?" moments that used to cost me a fortune. And you reallllly have gotten to know me it seems. You take my preferences and create categories for me. The top ten for me includes toy story 3 (because I seem to have rented quite a few animated features in the last 9 years) and Demetri Martin (because I seem to like quirky comics) . Youve figured out that I like Sci Fi movies, not just any sci fi but "goofy sci fi and fantasy for ages 11-12", Independent movies, and witty father son comedies. My favorite catagory you created for me based on my "taste preferences" is "Visually Striking Cerebral Documentaries." Yeah..I guess you could say like that stuff. But here was one I didn't understand ...Dark Father Daughter Social Issue Dramas. Really. That's not a joke, that's an actual category. Hmmmmmm ...wonder what series of films I watched that created that row? I'm surprised they didn't actually call me to say "Hey, we actually found a Tom Hanks movie you have NOT seen." Oh well...while Netflix figured out all this about me and my family, it seems to have forgotten why I joined them in the first place. TO CUT COSTS ...the plan I am on... "Two Blue Rays at a time with unlimited streaming (streaming is scrolling through 1000 movies that I don't care to see or don't care to see again) is now up to ...well.....its almost up to the price of the family going to the Regal. Aint worth it anymore. I think we'll spend that 300 bucks a year on something a bit more worthwhile. So, goodbye Netflix ...been a nice and very long...and apparently on your end, very personal relationship. Sorry to break your heart this way ..and sorry your stock has plummeted from 300 dollars to a little over 100 in the last 3 months ...but we just grew apart ..financially. Blockbuster, Redbox, Hulu, amd others ...I will play the field for awhile.

That was what Bruce said in 1999 being inducted to the Rock Hall Of Fame. ...now if thethe "15 years" he mentions seems short, it was Bruce honestly taking in to account the years Bruce played with someone else...and I can tell you from seeing those "F Street Band" performances as they were called, it felt VERY empty when a song came up that needed Clarence on Sax ...was not the same without him, as the music world never will be without him today. I've seen Bruce a dozen times ---first time in 1975 at Burruss Hall in Blacksburg for $4.50. and the arena was always electric when Clarence stepped into the spotlight. I also had one of the times of my life when "Clarence Clemons and the Red Bank Rockers" played to about 300 faithful during a huge ice storm at Radford University until the wee hours of the morning in the early 80's . Jimmy Fallon, this will come as no surprise to anyone who is a fan, has become this generations Johnny Carson, but more so because late night hasn't been as vital and "can't miss" since the days of Carson. It sure isn't Leno that sparks that sentiment, and Letterman did at one time, but now, it feels like watching him is a tribute to his former greatness. Having said that, allow me to offer that Fallon could be better if we could see more impressions. I think that probably makes me an old fogey to those who love the endless ingenuity of his games he plays, and the wonder of "remix the clips" and "thank you notes," but the truth is everytime Jimmy does an impression I find myself wishing that he did more characters he creates (like the game show hosty guys) and the likes of every impression from Bill Cosby to Bill Clinton to Bruce Springsteen to Neil Young. And speaking of the musical icons, Jimmy Fallon can play and spot on sing reproductions of any style or genre of popular music. I'd also like to see a return of the words of advice bit he did in the early stages of the show when he would be in the locker room giving advice to the likes of Tiger Woods. Great.

Lets get this straight> Republicans ..be they in Washington, or anywhere else, oppose what they call Obama Care because it is for their taste "socialism" and is unconstitutional because it requires one to be required to carry insurance. THEN , in an ultimate act of hypocrisy, are now requiring Virginia business owners to carry protection for autistic children in their company insurance. Hmmmmm can anyone say why this is different ? Once again, I say that the true way to get a national health insurance policy supported by the Republicans would be for Obama to oppose it, because even if something is right, and clearly makes sense, if Obama or other democrats are for it, Republicans must oppose it for some reason.

Seriously...a REPUBLICAN group of legislators MANDATED a health care covenant, while on a national level, opposes anything that resembles mandate as socialism. Really ? Really ? Seriously ?

Regis Philbin announces retirement today, June 18th 2011, saying "This is my last year on the show." He indicated that it would be late summer or fall before the end came, and no word on whether or not they will try to get a new Regis with Kelly. Regis Francis Xavier Philbin has been hosting talk and game shows since the 1950's. He is sometimes called the Hardest Working Man in Show Business.

He is the Guinness world record holder for most time in front of a television camera. He went to Notre Dame and always talked of his love for the Fighting Irish on the show. Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was when the game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire enjoyed HUGE ratings in 1999. He was also the original of America's Got Talent before being replaced by Jerry Springer. Regis will be irreplaceable on American TV.

Just chiming in with a rant on the shooting in Arizona that took the life of so many, so senselessly, including a 9 year old, and seriously injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, shot during a public political gathering in Tucson yesterday. My prayers are with all of the victims and their families, even the shooters family. At one point yesterday, both CNN and NPR had confirmed the congresswoman was dead, so the hope for her recovery is already a prayer answered.

Jared Lee Loughner is a terrorist plain and simple. Yes, he is completely disturbed, but then again so are the terrorists we most commonly think of as being of middle eastern descent with hatred for America. I am always a bit perplexed that terrorism doesn't happen as often here in America as it does worldwide. No doubt, in reading the incoherent youtube postings from the shooter, he's simply not living in the same world as the rest of us. Now today so many want to link the partisan rhetoric as one of the causes, even though no connection to the Limbaughs of the world has yet been proven...and I will just say I doubt it is proven to be the instigator here. The 22 year old is just a mess mentally, plain and simple. The tragedy is what it is, like the Virginia Tech shootings, one guy who somebody should have seen some warning signs about. It can unfortunately happen anywhere with any disturbed mind with or without political motivation. It unfortunately can't be prevented unless someone intervenes before a tragedy like this happens.

While I WANT to see a tempering of partisan political rhetoric on the airwaves, I doubt this incident is related and I doubt this will fix it. In fact, Limbaugh and those of his ilk will feast on the ratings they get this week while fending off the accusations that they are the cause of this tragedy. Don't blame free speech ...I doubt anything can be done to prevent the real cause, which is insanity hitting home.

Conan is back and will Letterman or Leno care ?

Conan O'Brien gets back into the fray of late night tv this weke and while any comedy lover will appreciate the added diversity and, one assumes, more jokes are always a good thing, the truthn is that Conan has a loyal following and has stirred up a lot of both sympathy and publicity with the way things ended at NBC. While there will be an initial splash of viewership that will be above the norm for TBS, one can’t imagine that the ratings on tbs will be in any POSSIBLE way higher than they were (LOW RATINGS in case you forgot) on the Peacock. Make a calendar appointment to check Conan a year from now and see where he is …my guess, not competing seriously in viewership with Dave, Jay, Jimmy ..or even Nightline. Maybe he'll keep his beard and that will keep us guessing for awhile on that issue. Max Weinberg is reason enough to watch sometimes too. But, ya know, Jon Stuart is the real King of Late Night anyway.

Review of Saturday Night Live for October 2, 2010 and the season so far.

The new 2010 season of Saturday Night Live is underway, and on show number 2 with Bryan Cranston, there was little redeeming value to the show. I will always be there but if it doesn't get better, SNL won't be there for me. The new skit with Miley Cyrus was good but as someone who has missed fewer than a dozen SNL’s since it’s inception, I have to say I have never seen a weaker cast tha this seasons. Weekend Update will always be something not to miss, but without Kristen Wiig & Andy Samberg, it’s all about potential now...and on the season opener, star studded with Tina Fey and more cameo's, the potential was fullfilled. just one week later, SNL fans are left a little empty. The Rahm Emmanuel open was probably the weakest I can remember. The open is supposed to be one the highlights every single week. It was just terrible. And sorry but ..I just hated Kanye …the white out staging was so bad it might have been one of the best jokes of the night.

On JMU beating Virginia Tech

On Sep 11 2010 when JMU Beat VT, I could honestly put myself in the middle ..as someone who grew up virtually inside Lane Stadium, the old days when anyone who wanted to could sit at the 50 yard line in the 4th quarter of many games and they let us kids walk right through the tunnel (before they put up hokie stone) to pester the players for their chinstraps and sweatbands. And now, a transplanted Harrisonburg area native with a great many ties to JMU sports. So here is what I had to say this past weekend.

JMU is a well coached, former (and future?) national champion who shouldn't be taken lightly, which is what was done by not only the Tech players, but especially by whomever thought it was wise to schedule anyone THAT good on THAT short of a week after THAT big of a game Monday. While my Hokie heart hurts (devastated)... allow me to be PROUD of the Dukes of JMU. (ELATION !)
Tech has nobody to blame but themselves, from the players, to the coaches, to whomever scheduled the game. And I can tell you ...and anyone who was at the Shenandoah Athletic Club this spring and saw a (beloved) Tech assistant coach BARELY... MENTION JMU as an opponent in front of a crowd of in Harrisonburg sports fans will back me up, that we should have seen the sign that Tech gave the Dukes no respect going in to the game at all. They damn sure got it now ..and it was earned by "don't beat yourselves" play by Coach Matthews kids who may have been less recruited than Techs guys, but proved they were not one less bit talented.

Its Football Season...Time for Gun Violence on CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC

Once again it is football season, and I will be watching the games on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Sunday Night, and Monday Night with my 8 year old son. What a great family thing to do. Right ? Teaching the values of competition, doing your best, and never giving up ..right ?

BUT. . .

With every game on network Fox will try to promote Bones, Dollhouse, the Good Guys, or Lonestar ...NBC will promote Law and Order, Chase or UnderCovers, CBS (which has the slowest damn website ever ..just sayin) will promote Hawaii Five-0, CSI, Criminal Minds , or the Mentalist ...and ABC will counter with Rookie Blue, Castle, Detroit 1-8-7, The Whole Truth, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters. Folks...I am not ranting against anyone's second amendment right ..but in the promo's for each of these shows, the network commercials will show ...several times an hour ...something exciting in the upcoming episode that will get people to watch, thereby increasing the networks bottom line. The clip they will show, soooooo many times, will be a GUN pointed at SOMEONES HEAD. Over and over and over ..the fact that Jack Bauer and 24 are gone will not likely lower the number of "I'm aiming my gun at your face" shots my 8 year old will have to endure to see if the Redskins can get in the endzone or not.

I am just asking for some sensitivity to family concerns during what I consider to be family watching time. These network show promos aren't even including the numerous commercials for whatever action movie is upcoming in a theatre near you. If you watch NFL football or college football, or maybe a NASCAR race, a World Series game or the Miami Heat in their new quest to be the first ever undefeated NBA team, just COUNT how many times a game...or an hour...or even a commercial break...where someone points a gun at someone.

Hey, I am not even bitchin that CBS has introduced the word SHIT into the title of a primetime series called Shit My Dad Says with Shatner, I don't even care that the winner of Survivor is often the slimiest, farthest away from the "golden rule" players... I am not as concerned about the sex or the language ..though they are and need to be concerns. I am not Joe Pious here. I am just saying that in the 60 to 100 years we are all on this planet, in REAL LIFE we probably will not ever see someone actually point a gun at someones face ..maybe once ...twice if you are a cop or a soldier. But, on network TV during sports events ..it happens every hour if not every fifteen minutes.

I am bitchin about the problem ...I don't have a solution. I'm just sayin. It upsets me.

Michael Larson - The man who avoided the WHAMMY with a plan

Very fascinated with Michael Larson, the game show icon from the show Press Your Luck. He won an unprecedented 110,000 in cash and prizes in June 1984.   He did it by avoiding the Whammy ..and he avoided the Whammy by memorizing the patterns on the big spin board. Watching frame by frame, he figured out that there were just five patterns to the Press Your Luck board, and took every penny he had to drive from Ohio to California to try out for the show. He took 47 spins with only 1 whammy..and that whammy was on his first spin, so it didn’t cost him anything. At one point host Peter Tomarkin said “How does it feel to own a part of CBS?”

He died young of throat cancer and it would appear that he chased schemes and scandalous ways of making a quick buck ..so once again the story of a big easy cash winner that ends sadly. It remains one of the biggest game show scandals of all time.

Dish Network Recording Popping / Flashing Problem Solved without technician

Dish Network has a HDTV DVR receiver that has a bit of a flaw, and I have the solution that I didn't find anywhere on the web, which is why I am posting it here.

The selling point on the receiver is that you only have to pay rent for one receiver to watch tv on two TV's in separate rooms. They give you an infrared remote for the "nearby" tv, and radio wave remote for the separate room to communicate with the distant TV. Well, for those who are changing from cable TV DVR's, you probably enjoyed on your old DVR the ability to watch one thing while DVR recording another ..or even recording two programs while watching a third that was recorded. When Dish was installed, the technician said that frankly it would not be able to do that with Dish. But in the users guide, on Page 57, it says that you can "set up the receiver to record two programs while watching one you've already recorded"

When I gave this a shot, it was catastrophic at first, until I learned the simple fix that nobody on the Dish 800 line could give me. When I attempted to do this as instructed in the manual, the box would flicker and actually emit a POP sound through the screen in such a way as to believe I was damaging my Vizio. The video would be of one channel you were recording, the audio would be of another or of the previously recorded...nothing matched up, and again, it was flash popping so much that it scared my 8 year old son. The only way to return to normal was a off / on reboot. Hell, I thought I broke the thing, and arranged for a tech to come back out, presumably to change out a defective receiver.

But here is how I was able to fix the problem so that with the Dish receiver you can watch one channel while recording another, or even record two and watch something already recorded.

First, go to single mode, not dual. (I had done this) But the key that is not in the guide, nor did they know on the 800 number is that you have to go to Menu / System Setup / SHARED VIEW and click on DISABLE VIEW. After you do that you will be much more satisfied with the results, and happy about the Hundreds of dollars over cable you are saving. Trust me, get rid of Comcast or the like and save a ton now that Dish has your local channels. Having said that, I didn't have the money, but they offer a much better receiver if you pay for it. NBC Wets Appetites with The Event Teasers

Are you also getting juiced for "THE EVENT," the new NBC show with a black president played by Blair Underwood ..not exactly an Obama look alike but close enough it might seem in mannerisms ..we will see. Jason Ritter ...looking more like dad every day is on board as well. He is a TV series veteran by now. And the promo's are set in realistic "you are there" tone. I am definitely on board too.

Is the S word in the language ?

A friend of mine notes that he keeps hearing the S word on TV lately, while other words are bleeped out. He says, "did I miss a memo ?"

Yes, the S word is apparently in the language now, with CBS putting the word in the TITLE of Shatners new show "S%*t My Dad Says" with little effort to mask the word. Seems that George Carlins 7 words have dwindled by a few over the years, haven't they?

Walk through your local Walmart and you will often see someone with the S word on a Tshirt, or the F word even. It was first on bumperstickers that I realized it is apparently not profanity if you say it on a shirt or a sticker. Never mind the 8 year olds who ask their parents "what does that mean ?" I personally think that on cable tv, go ahead and say what you want and show what you want. But in televised sporting events, early evening network tv, and on tshirts and bumperstickers ...clean it up for the sake of the kids.

My congressman represents me in my Shenandoah valley district, and at least as far as my eyes can see, even though his politics don’t always completely agree with mine, he seems to espouse the beliefs as a whole of the electorate who gave him the ride to DC. It may be the same in your congressional district, and the same for the US senators as well as our more locally elected leaders.   These congressman and senators with such an influence on not only our day to day lives and pocketbooks, but as so much as being noted these days, Capitol Hill has its hands on the finances of our grandchildren, one must realize that they are not just there to represent the good people of their districts or their states, but also its best interests in all aspects for today and all that has us moving forward.

It’s no secret that when the common you or me try to influence our congressman, we have little effect, but when a lobbyist bends a representatives ear, and sometimes fills a representatives campaign coffers, the true influence in Washington, especially when so much of it is unchecked, unnoticed, and unreported, is often not the man or woman we see “from the great state of …” on CSPAN, but rather, the corporate entity from whom the congressman or senator has in effect sold his place on that floor to, with full support of the electorate, if for no other reasons than the glaring ones of apathy and ignorance. So while Congressman X and Senator Y are voting in representation of our districts and states, the truth is that much like a designated hitter goes to bat for a pitcher in the lineup, on Capitol Hill we might as well think of those individuals as “Designated Humans” who are batting for the powerful corporations and special interests who have often paid dearly, (or at least believe they have)   for the votes that are cast in the chambers.

If we, the people, don’t like the sound of that, sorry, that is the way it is. Perhaps one way to remove corporate influence from the traditional congress might be to acknowledge that it does indeed belong. That there is no reason to necessarily call those giants of industry and special interest evil.   Perhaps the only way they can get that influence they might rightfully deserve in Washington is to line the pockets of your local Mr. Smith. Perhaps it’s time we give them an official seat at the table …but it would require a constitutional amendment.

Is it possible to imagine a body of government that officially recognizes the senator from the “great corporation of Walmart,” or a gavel pounding and into the microphone we hear “the chair yields the balance of time to the NRA to further discuss the bill.”   “The representatives from Pfizer and United Health will please be in order!”

Seating the giants of the New York Stock Exchange, the special interests and causes and concerns organizations in Washington may not be such a futile exercise. How much power to give them?   How about a great deal !   At least then it would be transparent and not as much behind the scenes where it is hidden from us and impossible to see. Yes, I am asking you to seriously consider another body of congress which would be run, not by the elected officials representing districts and states as it is now, but rather, the companies that do indeed enrich and empower American greatness, wealth, innovation, and diversity.

Yes I am serious and yes, it won’t happen overnight. But we have to admit that they are there already. And rather than complaining about what is done so often under the table in the name of Big Oil, Big Business, and the vast array of organizations hoping to levy interest on your representatives, why not officially invite them to the table and ask them to join in the discussion with the rest of us.

Grammy nominee Bruce Springsteen is up for FOUR awards this time around. According to Rolling Stone, he has a tremendous chance to avenge the snub that happened after he won the Golden Globe for best song from a motion picture and then did not even get NOMINATED for the Oscar.

Vizio TV Just Fades To Black

Well I waited for 2 years for the prices to drop low enough for me and my family on a meager income to afford a new HDTV, and I finally pulled the trigger and got a 42 inch 420E. After all those ads from Collin Cowherd I was probably in the mindset to choose Vizio over Sony, Phillips, and Samsung that Walmart sells at a discount prices, but when you put them side by side, it seemed that Vizio really does get a better picture for the dollar. So I couldn't wait, and with my luck the cable box died the very day I got the TV home, and of course, 2 hours were spent thinking the TV was the problem before finding out that the mother board and connections on the cable box had become disconnected, and there would be no service call on a Saturday Night. The picture was beautiful when it was finally hooked up, bypassing the comcast cable box and just putting the cable directly into the TV input, and on Monday the Cable guy (and Yes his name was Larry The Cable Guy, but never said Git Er Done) came in and admired the new Vizio but warned, "God help you if anything goes wrong." Sure enough, on Thursday, the TV began just fading to Black. You'd be watching and suddenly, the thing Fades to Black. I have saved the box to return it to Walmart, and the VIZIO technician says via email that I should try to basically reboot the TV ..and it may have to do with some kind of setting that I suspect has to do with the sun hitting the TV screen (ADVANCED ADAPTIVE LUMA) It hasn't happened since, and as of now it's been 4 days, but I am very suspect of such a major problem with a brand new TV. I love the picture...and at least I am covered for 90 days by Walmart and supposedly a year by Vizio. Here is the procedure for undoing the sudden fade to black technical problem on a new vizio.

2- Unplug TV from outlet

6- Power the TV back on

There is also a factory reset option in your menu under the SETUP section. It will say either "reset all settings" or "system reset". I would recommend this option as well.

In your Advanced Video Settings there is a setting called ADVANCED ADAPTIVE LUMA. Please turn this off.

Eddie And The Cruisers is a Yearly Guilty Pleasure

I had a chance to see Michael Pare in Eddie and the Cruisers as one of the first things I saw on my new Vizio. It was a great reminder of how MUCh the music in the movie sounded soooo much like Bruce Springsteen music...not just influcenced, but I believe directly and purposely copied directly from the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. It's not just that John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band resemble Springsteen vocally, but also, the music seems to have riffs directly lifted from the likes of Roy Bittan ....a scene in a bar where the piano is just being tinkled around on and it sounds exactly like the backing that Bittan would give The Boss on one of his storytelling escapades mid concert. Wild Summer Nights and On The Darkside could easily be fit in between any of the songs on Darkness on the Edge Of Town, or The River, and even Betty Lou's Got A New Pair Of Shoes sounds like an upbeat Springsteen flipside or even a concert cover in the spirit of Quarter To Three. Eddie And The Cruisers is SOOO cheezy ...but I list it as my guilty pleasure movie year in and year out.

I grew up watching the incredible performances of the Jackson 5 and watched the Jackson Five Cartoon on Saturday Mornings ("Man Alive its the Jackson Five.) Wasn't that big of a fan of the song or the movie Ben, but realized the incredible talent when I was in High School and all the girls wanted to dance to MJ music. I was appalled by all the things about the man that were comically and tragically ugly, but on the day of Michael Jackson's death, I most remember the moment I was on the phone with my girlfriend and just loud enough to hear was the Motown 25 celebration, and when Michael Jackson did the moonwalk, I just sat right up and was astonished at how great that was.

I remember We Are The World ...getting everyone together to sing and "check their ego"'s at the door. Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Rogers, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Willie Nelson, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Ray Charles and everyone who was anyone singing on that song....HIS song.

And I remember this more than anything. There was this thing that was getting alot of Buzz called MTV. We didn't yet get MTV on our cable ...but I remember the fuss was that MTV was getting HUGE and that they did NOT play any black artists....probably not because of racism, but because they were leaning on ROCK and ROLL as their forte. Well, MJ had this great album, and a song on it featured Eddie Van Halen, one of the many that Michael always surrounded himself with ..the best of the best. MTV played Beat It because it had a ROCKER, Eddie Van Halen . That opened the door for them to take a chance on playing another song we know now so well ... Billie Jean. Wow .. how it all exploded from there. And ended tragically today.

We are not so stupid as to think American Idol producers ACCIDENTALLY ran over on time thus preventing anyone who DVR's Idol from seeing what will be one of the more talked about performances of the season, Favorite Adam Lambert singing Mad World while bathed in blue light and actually restraining the screaming guns and roses like wails he is famous for. It was so great Simon even gave him a standing ovation for the frontrunner of season 8. Fortunately, here is a video of the performance for as long as it's around. I don't think it is in Hi Definition, but its a good clip for anyone who missed it because the DVR didn't record it or catch the next program.

Shame on the Fox producers for trying to boost downloads profits and create a stir on purpose. My wife and I would have shot the TV if we could have ...good thing for 24 hour waiting periods.

Monsters Vs. Aliens Soundtrack and Sounds Shine

The new movie Monsters vs Aliens is the best non-pixar animated movie since Shrek. It couldn’t have been more of a personal thrill and family fun movie. Unlike so many movies that come out anymore, they did not waste all of the humor and best scenes in the numerous previews and advertising, which included the Super Bowl 3D experience.

Keifer Sutherland from 24 channels George C Scott from Dr. Strangelove to General Monger, who has been the warden in charge of the secretly imprisoned Monsters for 50 years. “This place is an X-file wrapped in a cover-up and deep fried in a paranoid conspiracy!"

Scour the internet and you will get glowing reviews for the voice performances of Reese Witherspoon as the voice of Susan, Seth Rogan as the Blob without a brain, (“turns out you don’t need one”), a fascinating Mad Scientist turned Cockroach played masterfully by Hugh Laurie, and the most interesting performance, the evil Galaxhar, incredibly interpreted by Rainn Wilson. Don’t blame Will Arnett for the fact that his Missing Link character is the least interesting …”Link’s” scenes are the only ones that fall a bit flat in the picture. As voice performances go, don’t overlook Amy Poehler who manages to make the antagonists computer sound even a bit sexy a few times, and Renee Zellweggers’s Katie, on her “worst date ever” ina bit part that was memorable. But ..with all the accolades, I would like to highlight two lesser praised aspects of the movie …music and sound.

This is a great movie LOUD. I can only imagine what it would have been like to see it in the acclaimed 3D, but the sound effects were as completely surrounding as any movie I have seen since the advent of surround sound. Copters encircle you, explosions engulf you, giant robots walk and destroy with booms and booms you won’t experience and the sound made when Galaxhar and his clones walk on their pods, the sound effect is addictive….perfect.

The music was great, right up to the B52’s Planet Claire over the credits…..and when the President, played by Stephen Colbert, starts communicating with the aliens by playing the booop beep beep boo bop from Close Encounters of the third Kind in an absolutely hilarious spoof and segues it into Axel F Theme that has everyone both in the theatre and onscreen dancing. You get the monsters playing cards to the Little River Band “Reminiscing”, and even early in the movie, “Tell Him” will stay with you til the next day and will be played by the DJ at the next wedding you go to.

So many reasons to love this movie …it’s not as Oscar worthy as Wall-E was, but it definitely a movie that’s worth every overpriced penny to take the family to.

A trip to see Hairspray at the JPJ in Charlottesville and observing the crowd there

The Mrs. & I went to Hairspray ...a tremendously catchy musical that was totally worth it, even if I had to check my man card at the door. Hairspray is beneath the dancing and singing, a pretty persuasive story about standing up to racism and discrimination against weight challenged individuals, and for that matter, discrimination of all kinds.

So amongst the thousands in attendance, I could only find one patron in attendance of color. Hmmm . Well I guess that's how it is for a variety of reasons ...hopefully none of the racist.

I just have to at least consider the belief that as much as things have changed ...where a story about fighting for integration because anything other than that is wrong on so many levels, that integration sometimes just "happens" as a matter of culture.
America has surely proven it has changed at the voting booth ...but change in day to day society may still have a ways to go.

The Mrs. and I realized how entertained we were and for the 1/4 the cost of a Springsteen show. Am I getting old or what?

Seth Myers is coming into his own as Weekend update Host. He and Amy were great together, but Seth by himself hasn't just taken a little getting used to, its actually been a pleasant surprise to see just how good he can be.

And the "But Really" commentary about Michael Phelps pot use where he closes by saying roughly that if you are partying with Michael Phelps and you think its more important to take out your camera to sell a picture to the tabloids of Phelps getting high rather than saying "how cool is it to party with Michael Phelps," then you're a dick ! was a dead on conclusion to a well crafted and memorable piece of topical comedy. One of SNL finest moments I thought.

Remembering Lakeside Amusement Park in Salem Virginia

Lakeside Amusement Park...now those were the days in the 70's.

I Grew up in Blacksburg and Roanoke. Had some memorable days there at Lakeside. My sisters and I went and counted out pennies (you could pay per ride in those days) to ride the Shooting Star ...I still have a love for wooden roller coasters. Country nights included Billy Crash Craddock ...and that Choo Choo that circled the park was just the ultimate experience for a kid. I remember the flood that devastated the park, worked at TV10 the day a worker was killed by the coaster, and in the final days of the park, got choked up while editing a package for TV10 that was on the last days of the Shooting Star. Lakeside is surely missed by anyone who laughed there.

I was sitting here on a Saturday Night after wondering just what to say about Springsteen getting snubbed for an Oscar nomination ...and in the course of surfing I ran across Jersey Mike who has a post that my wife will just love. She has been hinting at what a sell out Bruce seems to have become lately ... and I myself have been wondering about this for awhile.

He is almost sixty and putting out AlOT of PRODUCT. I have to say that the product is of high quality. For instance, his concerts are, if not as good as ever, at least far superior from what you'd expect at age 59. BUT .. it is right to point out the walmart release ofa special Walmart only Greatest hits is absurd. Jersey Mike has one of the best Bruce posts I have read ...from a diehard fan who has to admit the truth. With The Superbowl performance, and using Born To Run to promote the Superbowl (something he has never allowed before ...commercial adaptation of his music) along with some seemingly stolen riffs, and that Walmart release, its just sometimes seeming the Bruce Bucks are the thing for him.

I say this and still will be on the edge of my seat waiting for halftime on Sunday.

My goodness that was a G R E A T concert. I would have been there if I didn't have to work. Bruce was incredible on both ends, but Bono , Garth, and Stevie outshined him. To say the music was appropriate is a gross understatement. Well done and the crowd was huge. I was at the Clinton event and can tell you that the performances were better, and more importantly, the crowd was denser and more involved. I kept encouraging my six year old to put the game down and W A T C H History being made.

Now, having said that, I have to bitch about this. COMCAST did NOT free up the HBO for nonsubsribers until 7:09pm and I suspect they were trying to profit from the event with people quickly subscribing or something. Whatever, it is NOT right that they did not free up the HBO to non subscribers and I can't think of what their punishment should be ..but COMCAST SUCKS! If a few thousand people read that, maybe I will be happy. Can't believe that they made me miss the first few minutes. I HATE comcast.

Gosh I was reaaaallllly rooting for him. He had a down to earth quality that definitely won over enough to eek out the first election he won, promising to be a Uniter and not a Divider. Now as he leaves, we have never been more divided in a 4 year period. Maybe thats over.

I am neither a R or a D ...but I am like alot of folks who wished Al gore had a bit more charisma to go with his ideas ...in the end, his ideas DID win me over ...when i realized the 2000 election seemed to be between two second generation politicians with wayyyy to much sense of entitlement. But while one was a soundbite MASTER, the other tried to inject old fashioned substance into the discussion and nobody paid attention. It was the only way possible a former alcoholic, coke sniffing C student had a chance against a moral deomocrat centrist who had dabbled in rocket science and those little teeny tiny minuscule things he used to say about preserving the environment and saving the earth ...you know he was considered such a wackjob. SO ..the I have to say that the nation that voted for a C student over a future nobel prize winner kinda of got what it deserved. Red state USA could simply NOT get over the fact that Bill Clinton got a BJ and, yes, lied about it while his wife(and world) watched. I hope Gore someday says to both Clinton and Ralph Nader and says "Look What YOU caused."

It would only have been a 4 year suffering, but the twin towers, the mission accomplished phot shoot, and the fact the dems ran a complete and total tool in 2004 gave us yet another 4 years which we just prayed wouldn't lead us into anything so terrible as total financial collapse, or anything THAT bad. But ..it IS what America asked for on election day in 2004...so again, you get what you ask for.

While a president doesn't REALLY make all the choices for us ..he does stand a good chance of making us feel a little good about ourselves by serving with DIGNITY ... I think that is my biggest dissapointment of the Bush years ....how undignified it was to consistently bend the truth as if we were blinder than Ray Charles, insult the reset of the world as if they didn't belong on the same planet as us, and cater and cowtow to the cronies and big business ideals that made no comon sense to anyone for whom the rules did not directly benefit. Catering to Big Oils greed was, in my opinion, a major catylyst for the financial spiral we are in.

I guess you could say that the best thing to come out of 8 years of George Bush was some pretty inspired Bruce Springsteen music. Small consolation I guess

I sure pray, as we say goodbye to a comedians dream come true in the oval office, and hello to one with so much immensity of hope that it would be impossible for just about anyone to live up to, and expectation that cannot be lowered. Obama has gotten VERY good, in fact, even better since the election, at articulating all of our country's problems and exactly how it is and whose to blame for all of it. Let's hope in a year he is as articulate at defining how we are on the right path.

Salma Hayek is in character as a nurse when Alec Baldwin visits her and at an event in Central Park. When, out of the screen, (and I don't even have HDTV) Salma Hayek in a way that I am quite sure we haven't seen before ...and with her we have seen it all ...but it never looked better.

9-Tim Russert - His death showed us just how integrated into pop culture he was. Gosh, election night showed us how much we missed him.

8-Bruce Springsteen ...at HIS age, his energy doesn't fade, his concerts are reviewed as the best of his career (BETTER THAN THE LATE 70'S --YES) and then, in a change from 4 years ago,his political activism doesn't leave him looking like an ass.

7-The Blonde Chick On The View - She had alot people saying things like, "you have to admire her for standing up for what she believes in." Alot of people at work are put in a liberal hornets nest with conservative views, or vice versa, every single day, and have to make those choices about which arguments are worth all the fuss. Her WORK ENVIRONMENT was on display everyday, and whether your agreed or disagreed with her VIEW, truth is, she was mighty impressive for a former Survivor reality show contestant.

6-Oprah Winfrey-Have you ever played a video game and ...for instance, stopped and saved the game, then tried two different paths from that point on ????? Well, I'd like to stop the election at the point where Oprah, a day after having Bill Clinton on her show, claimed she'd no longer have any other candidate on other than Obama. Yes, Obama had good momentum before Oprah's endorsement, but, how his campaign was just a downhill jog from that point on ...I sure would like to know how the election would have turned out if you went back to that point and took back the big O for Obama.

5-The Pregnant Man- I mean, C'mon ....wouldnt you believe that man was more likely to jetpack to Pluto before a man would be pregnant. What kind of Woody Allen world are we living in????

4-John McCain --OK he lost ..we all get it, but, here is a guy many should be able to relate to. Til his dying day he will know he had the better resume, paid his dues, executed his plan, made decades of hard work and preserverance pay off, only to lose the job to guy who wowed and flashed his way to the ultimate prize. If you have ever lost the job to THAT guy, or had THAT guy get the last word in with your boss, even though his BS was self evident, you can relate to John McCain.

3-Al Franken-As I write this, I have no idea if he is a Senator or not. But ..the guy who was on SNL as the guy who was "good enough, smart enough, and doggone it people like me," was considered by HALF the voters in Minnesota to be worthy of representing them in the US Senate.

Review: COLBERT CHRISTMAS

Well, I don't yet have a TV or Movie ratings system designed for this blog yet ..but whatever the criteria, A Colbert Christmas, The Greatest Gift Of All, which debut's in the Christmas season of 2008, gets the A+, 10 out of 10, or the both thumbs up. It was funny in a unique way, musical in a surprising way, and even managed to touch me a bit ....and I confess that I am not a big fan of The Colbert Report, so this is all the more surprising.

And ...DON"T YOU stay away from this if you aren't a fan of the Colbert Report, cause this is nothing like it.

When you watch the show on Comedy Central, or on DVD, you know the Colbert never comes out of character, and you wonder about this eclectic array of guests. But one by one, the guests come in and are integrated with the plot, the Colbert can't get out of his cabin to travel to the city to do his Christmas Special. The songs are FUNNY and sung well.

THIS COMEDY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL IS MORE MUSICAL THAN AN ANDY WILLIAMS SPECIAL OF YEARS GONE BY.

Colbert begins with "Another Christmas Song," which is a generic christmas song and is blatently for profit ..he even exclaims that people should buy it for generations to put his kids through school. I think it's the worst song on here, probably because I genuinely LOVE Christmas music, but could understand if this is some people's favorite.

Toby Keith sings with gun in hand in "Have I Got A Present for You !" It somehow makes a hoot of redneck violence ..and even though the joke is on Toby, he knows it and goes along.

"Nutmeg" is the song that "park ranger" John Legend comes in to sing, under the pretense that you can't possibly serve eggnog without nutmeg, sings a song about nutmeg that is really one of the dirtiest, funniest sex songs ever ....a fifth grader would appreciate the jokes ...but it still stays north of the Howard Stern line and never offends. (OK I take that back..don't let your kids watch a Colbert Christmas)

Willie Nelson sings the "Little Dealer Boy" about his gift for the baby jesus which doesn't shine like gold, but smokes more sweet than frankincense and myrrh. As a Willie fan, I am blow away ..as a Christian, I am laughing at something I know I shouldn't be, and amidst the comedy, Willie gets a message of the love at Christmas through in the song. (Don't Bogart Love) It''s a memorable moment, one that will live for ages, as I am sure the song will on Ipods or whatever we play music on 20 years from now.

"Can I Interest You In Hannakuh,' is John Stewart and Colbert's chance to duet ...another song that will outlive the Comedy Central careers of both these talented men. Stewart pokes good natured fun at the jewish holiday, asking Colbert to consider his holiday, which he ends up not doing because he is a Christian...which is what his character would do.

Fiest, the singer made famous by her Ipod commercial, is an angel who gets so many prayers, she puts Colbert on a kind of Angel Hold when he prays, getting him through a phone tree with her song "Please Be Patient." Both she and her voice are beautiful....the song is funny and moves the plot along.

The best musical moment is when the only song NOT specifically written for this special is revealed with Colbert singing the opening verse of Elvis Costello's "Whats So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding," at the piano. Costello, who has been eaten by a bear that reminds you of the Bumble in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, sings along from the stomach of the bear (don't get too caught up with the plot details until you see the special ...it isn't THAT far fetched for Comedy Central) ..and then Willie, Toby, John and Fiest all join in to sing the song that is on my permanent Top Five, and now, should be given consideration as a Holiday Song.

Finally, Costello, now saved from the stomach of the bear by Santa Clause himself, and Colbert sing a touching song, "There Are Much Worse Things To Believe In," Again, a touching song , sung well, written well, has a funny moment or two ...hits you in all the right spots.

Yes ..the special is a farce ...but its right. You're gonna like it if you give it a try. Watch it, buy it, enjoy it, and as I write this, I believe the music from it will live on for years and years beyond the Colbert Report.

Katy Couric isnt the same ...

Katy Couric on Letterman last night was not the same as I remember. On the Today Show, it was that warm toothy smile, welcoming personality, carefree or careful depending on the subject matter, but never standoffish or cold and hard. Those were some of her attributes, at leats as I thought, when seeing her on Letterman last night ...talking about Sara Palin she almost bristled and never really participated in the clear humor of the ordeal, where, if ever there was going to be a lighter side to it, it should have come from the Letterman Couric moment. She seems affected ...yes job stress will do that to you.

I wanted to weigh in on the discussion of Hillary Clinton as a possible Secretary Of State. NOW that there has been so much discussion about it, there is practically no way that Obama can't pick Hillary ...if he passes her up, it would be a double snub and MY how things would be cold between them from now on. (think things are cold now ?) I admit, I am no political expert (this is not news to you) but lets be honest. Obama needs Hillary as a friend now ..and ESPECIALLY needs her as friend 4 years from now, especially if things don't go well. (or have you forgotten Carter vs Kennedy which contributed Carter's re-election defeat) So ...the only way Clinton does NOT get this position is if she turns it down.
How can anyone think Clinton isn't the absolute best for this job ..and that would be true had she not spent a single day in the senate or run for president. She will be beloved by the world, and much like her presidency would have been, America and the world will get a two for one deal. Of course, because Bill cannot likely keep his dick out of the news, we all look forward to where that will lead right ? (with Hillary out of the country quite a bit) But all in all, a good thing for our country is Hillary in this position ...and it's probably going to be the first GREAT "yes we can" moment of the Obama Presidency.

It was unbelievable to me that Sara Palin could be pranked by CANADIANS claiming to be Sarkozy . It was the latest from the Masked Avengers comedy duo. I have to say that I heard the call and thought it was soooo vanilla ..if you get a chance to hear it, you won't associate it with Howard Stern baby booey type pranks. The most Sarkozy said provocatively was that his wife was hot in bed. Palin just giggled ..said "give her a hug for me," and frankly, scored points from me in that she came across while believing she was talking to the most powerful man in Europe as pretty much the same girl we see on the campaign trail. Here is little ol me chiming in on the subject of the 2008 election with Obama nearly a certainty to win the presidential race as I write this, and an amazing thing happening in that AL FRANKEN is about to be a senator. WOW.

I have diehard republican friends and democrat friends as well, and in my day to day life try to honestly not to offend either side with anything overtly partisan for the sake of a political party ...and at the risk of some of those friends, and even family, running into the blog post and knowing what they may already suspect ...I ABHOR those who make political choices NOT based on issues, but rather by party affiliation. To flush this out more, here in the Shenandoah Valley, where it is VERY VERY conservative and republican, there are honestly those who just feel they don't need to educate themselves on someones stance on issues. They think all democrats are bad, (evil even) and all republicans are good. Terrible thing for America ..this my team / your team system. And that's one of the reasons that an Obama speech here, with the usual adoration that accompanys all his stumping, will seem so out of place at JMU tomorrow.

In these parts, I remember how bad it got when Clinton was president. To some who would call candid comment or write the Daily News Record letters to the editor, everything from the decline of morals in our country (might have had a point) to tornados in the midwest (eh ..) were Bill Clinton's fault.

Now apparently ....are things changing here ? On the advent of Barrack Obama visiting JMU in Harrisonburg Virginia, putting every single vote in play ...even the ones in this republican stronghold, I will go out on a limb and express here some thoughts on the election for the sake of expressing myself ...and hoping I don't lose a friend.

I am a ticket splitter. I am voting for a democrat for Senator, as Warner vs Gilmore is the contest of one of the best governors this state ever had against the hands down worst. If there is a race I am passionate about, it is this one ...it's my main reason for making sure I get to the booth November 4th.

I will also vote for Bob Goodlatte, who has not exactly stood up to the Bush administration ...but carries experience, intellect, and common sense back to Washington with my vote. Having said that, I believe that with the anti -Bush backlash , the local democrats have possibly missed a chance to steal this seat by running such an unknown against him.

Now ..for president, it depends on the issue that matters the most to me that day as to who I will vote for ....but I have to state mostly that once again I am saying "are these the best two we could come up with ???" And ...I think NOT. But ...you can't write in that Alfred E Neuman guy from Mad Magazine and have it count for much.

I also think that NOT enough attention is paid to the fact that the president does NOT get to just do whatever he wants ...I have heard sooooo much about McCains budge and Obamas budget, and neither of these budgets will actually be enacted as they are being run upon. Look at them as ideals ...don't believe the whole package comes with the political promises.

On the issue of health care, probably the most important to my family which includes a cancer survivor, McCain is not standing up enough for my taste to the problems with drug company, AMA, and insurance company run medical system we have. Things need to change, and if I realllllly believe that Obama can get prexisting conditions to be accepted in a job change, which he says he can, or at least his ads claim that, vs. what McCains beliefs on health care appear to be, then my choice is made ...period.

I believe that McCain used pretty bad judgement in picking Palin ...We all will be interested to see where she ends up 12 years from now ..a friend thinks playboy is more a possibility then a presidential run , but I think she will gain experience somewhere, and make a more serious run at some point. Having said that, she is in no way shape or form qualified to be president ...but then again, that brings to mind Obama ...who also has such little experience. If experience were the issue ...its McCain.

And on the issue of Change ...no doubt CHANGE will come when Obama takes over with a likely democratic senate and congress ....but will that change be as partisan on the liberal democrat side as the republicans can be sometimes ? The CHANGE that straight talkin John seems to advocate is more my style. Middle of the road, independent of party influence ....if I realllly thought a McCain administration would be independent of partisanship ...he'd have my vote on that issue.

So ..it's complicated right ?

Oh ..and I am a Springsteen fan, but when Bruce has made his speeches for Obama ...I have more listened to his enthusiastic ramblings about American ideals ...but I HONESTLY think HE ought to run for something. He says these great things about America, then just throws in there, "and Obama is the guy that will uphold these ideals." I am not basing my vote on what my longtime hero in life and music says for me to do ....but his prose has been remarkable ..much moreso than when the dems ran such a tool 4 years ago and Bruce went so far for him as to have many believing he'd get a cabinet post.

Eight years ago, we chose a C student over a future nobel prize winner. I kinda lost faith that American democracy, though it is a right way of doing things, doesn't always make the right choice. Always wonder where we'd be today after 8 years of President Gore. No worse I guarantee.

I can honestly say at this point, 8 days from election, that I am someone who could be pursuaded to change my mind on the presidential election. But I am leaning Obama ...with a certain amount of "show me what you can do big man." Let's hope what he can do is reallly lead America to think about whats right for America on the issues and lead us away from partisan politics.

A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared . Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, 'What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?' The young boy was apologetic. 'Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do,' He pleaded. 'I threw the brick because no one else would stop...' With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. 'It's my brother, 'he said. 'He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.' Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, 'Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me.'

Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. 'Thank you and may God bless you,' the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy! push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: 'Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!' God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our choice to listen or not.

Really enjoying Fringe from Fox TV these days (returns in 90 seconds) ...realizing that I liked it alot more when it was called X files ....No doubt you just replace the female lead with Scully and it's not much diff than the same...on the episode with the giant butt alien plug they pretty much quit hiding it. I can appreciate the kick up in gentle hostility between the warm and friendly handshakes and hugs between the can Obama, knowing he has the lead, pretty much continued his course and reminded us a few times that he will cut taxes to 95% of Americans while McCain reminded us one time too many that Obama voted for a 3 million dollar projector. (the projector was an educational planetarium necessity.

I thought the clear winner was Brokaw, who kept beating it into the candidates heads to obey the rules until, low and behold, they finally did.

Have you ever been to one of those Bruce concerts where he gets the crowd in an even more frenzied state simply by LOOOKING at them ? He looks to the left ..the crowd to his left is earsplittingly loud, only to be outdone by the crowd he soon looks to next. It is POWER he commands from that stage, but its in the rock concert moment and helped along by the words and music of his songs, but also the performances he is known for himself alongside the house rockin', pants droppin', earth shockin', hard rockin', booty shakin', love makin', heart breakin', soul cryin', death defyin' legendary E Street Band.

Now, as he was four years ago for Kerry, he is back on the stump ...but now, he has the memory that his cause, no matter how clear the right and wrong choice seemed to him, LOST. Once again he is trying to fit the square pegs of songs like Promised Land, The Risin, and from four years ago, Kerry's theme, No Surrender, through the round holes of a political campaign. It seemed to me that his gift as an orator was mostly only known to his truest fans who followed him always for more than just his ability to write a catchy hook and lead a band for 4 hours in a night. And I think 4 years ago, he was viewed more as an entertainer than as a political activist. It seems the words are more carefully constructed and it's more important to him to have them heard and acted upon this time...and his stature as a statesman continues to grow.

Bruce stuck his neck out for the democratic candidate four years ago, and America did NOT care ...or at least enough ...for what Bruce had to say about who to vote for. I just think that Tina Fey, who is riding the pinnacle of her popularity, is only returning to SNL to do this character in the firm belief that it is a short term role...in that she doesn't believe Palin will actually BE the VP ..so she won't need spoofing on a regular basis soon. Having said that, if McCain does win, Fey will almost have to return as a semi-regular cast member...this is one of the most popular characters ever on SNL. Ok..here is the deal...David Blaine keeps sucking me in with making me believe he is going to do something awful to himself ...last night he was going to jump to his death ...or at least, injury, from 44 feet in the air. The big moment arrives....the announcer even said he would probably do harm to his body...well he was connected by wires....floated upward and out of the screen shot. You could even hear, like, a director or something say ..>"get him up there now".....ridiculous ..in fact FRAUD. Wall-E ! So much subtext that I certainly won't attempt to bring it all to the forefront when you can find those easter eggs and subtexts elsewhere, but the first thing I have to say about Disney Pixar Wall-SE is that for Pixar, the bar has been set soooooo high, it was unbelievable how far they could exceed expectations. PEOPLE CLAPPED AT THE END OF THIS MOVIE. I have never been to a movie where that happened.

Walmart is the villian here. Make no mistake that as much as we love having Walmart to sell us everything in one place, all that in one place ends up in the trash ..and thats our future.

Christian Religious subtext including EVE the robot as the giver of life and who is responsible for giving a humanless Earth humans again.

Many references to 2001 and Kubrick including two musical selections and the ode to Hal .

Many hidden references to other Pixar gems and of course the ever present John Ratzenberger who has been in every Pixar movie.

Star Wars and Star Trek references ....the Final Frontier in the Buy N Large bon voyage ad.

It comes to mind that perhaps at Pixar, somebody might have said at one point, "do you think this movie might have tooo much love story for the kiddies?" and fortunately, someone said , "why don't we put in MORe love story." Big risks were taken in the movie ...from the abundance of sap between Eve and Wall-E to the way that kids and adults both felt uneasy with the start of the movie and the shape that the future world is found in(kept looking for Will Smith), to the facxt that there is almost no dialogue in the movie. Big Risk, Big Reward !

And most everyone noticed the dig at George Bush when the president in the face of obvious failure and disaster exclaims "stay the course!" I would have stood up and cheered for Mission Accomplished.

There was a great slam of Big Oil with the sea of sludge.

And if there was one thing that felt a little awful at the end, it was that as happy as we all were that Eve and Wall-E were together again, we had genuine concern for the ships residents who had an upcoming miserable existance on the earth that they had landed on. NEVER leave before the credits at a PIXAR movie, and the primitive type graphics told the story of how they rebuilt civilization.

I am pretty sure that an animated film has never been nominated for best picture by Oscar. If this one is not, there will be many people with legitimate gripes. Wall-E is an unbelievable masterpiece.

It is the story of lessons that every troubled young man should learn, given posthumously by his Grandfather. There are no curse words and nothing the whole family couldnt see, although 9 and unders won't understand the context. However, it is a worthwhile movie for anyone of any age, with important, not so subtle messages you might use the film to send if you have a troubled, mischevious, self important teen at home. If you like the Bucket List, you will LOVE the ULTIMATE GIFT.

Hillary's Kennedy quote NOT as bad as Limbaugh Show Speculation on McCains Death

There has been much talk about the remark Hillary Clinton made concerning the whys of her staying in the race when nearly mathematically eliminated. What she said about Robert Kennedy’s assassination in 1968 would be unforgivable if she meant the worst that her statement conjures up…but it is also clear to everyone including the Kennedy family and Obama that she only misspoke and did not mean to say that she was in it because Obama might be killed. NOW if she HAD said that, she would deserve whatever the fate of t hose who would judge her because it is a terrible thing to think about, much less say. However, just being honest, I wonder how many people really do believe that Obama is in danger, as any candidate probably is from kooks, but Obama probably more so, one would think, because of racist beliefs by the lowest element. While Clinton, as a candidate, should never have uttered the comment , the discussion is nonetheless there at water coolers around the nation … Obama has acknowledged the presumed danger to him in a Brian Williams interview, and denying the reality of the vigilance that will be needed by his security.

Now…I say all that to say all this. While the comment I am writing about next did not come from a candidate, it DID come on the benchmark national conservative talk radio program ..the Rush Limbaugh Show. In the past week, Limbaugh had a fill in, someone I did not know, who said this, and I will not be able to directly quote, but I will come close. He said that the ultra conservative republicans who hate the McCain candidacy should be rejoicing because they would soon be getting the ultra conservative president they desired. He said that McCain would not live out his first term, and to get elected, he would HAVE to pick a conservative VP to fortify the republican base, and that given McCain would likely die in his first term, the conservative republicans should be happy that by electing McCain, they would ultimately get their wish. ON RUSH LIMBAUGH’S SHOW! While this was not a direct quote, I got the gist of it right here, and he closed by saying something like “you people are going to get what you want..this might not be so bad afterall.” I have got to believe that I am not the only one outraged by someone seemingly rooting for McCains death , albeit after election. I have got to believe even McCains people are mad about this.
as I post this…I request that if someone knows who the Limbaugh guest host was, let me know. AND if you are asking the question ? “why do you listen to that crap,” I tell you what I tell my wife….when ESPN starts talking about NBA, I drift to another station quickly.

A Rant About STUPID Jurors

I want to talk about how dumb juries can be.

In my area, a couple is on trial for using their storefront as a place for the dealing of drugs including meth. in fact...they were caught with 500 grams of meth.

do you know how much that is ??? 500 grams.

And after jury selection, non the first day of the trial, the wife pleaded guilty to her parts of the 500 grams of meth...now the community ahs a chance to do something about the scourge of what this does to a small town in the way of increased crime, the prominnence of drugged up scum, and most importantly, the awful peer pressure that high school kids get from others to try meth and other drugs.

Now on the third day of the trial, some of the jurors were admonished for talking about the case amongst themeselves, asking the question "who is xxxx xxxxxl." SHE IS THE ONE WHO HAD 500 GRAMS OF METH AND PLEADED GUILTY TO IT. Excuse me, but as important as it is to do something about this particular problem...can we try...just try to seat jurors who have a stinking clue as to whats going on ???

There is no doubt that the current economic cruch is affection every middle and lower class american in a way that those have not been affected, perhaps since gas rationing of the 70's...and the argument can be made that nothing has been more severe since the depression or WWII. Price of absolutely everything is going up. Noty just gas which is astronomical, but groceries and neccessary clothing, housing, and everything considered a luxury as well. I know first hand about unemployment ...with evven those who have been steadily employed for decades being let go by miserly business owners who , when times get tough, know that THEY won't be the ones to suffer...suffer those loyal employees as a point of preference for them.

Alot of people are hurting...and you can shake your fist at big oil and the oil producing countries who want to maximize their profit. Yes it's greedy, and yes it just isnt nice, but for the most part, nobody gives away their goods or services for free, so don't expect oil producers, farmers, or anyone else to be expected to not attempt to maximize their earnings. What CAN be done is to conserve oil in every way possible, thereby turning the screws of supply and demand against big oil and oil producers, and by not cutting them any breaks ..and THAT is where the government CAN come in. Instead of a smile and wave from Bush and Cheney .....you can remind them that we have th power to make life difficult for them if they don't play nice. Perhaps the next adminnistration will do that. The only mission accompliSHED SO FAR BY THIS ADMINISTRATION IS for th most part standing back and cheering on Exxon Mobil's record profit each quarter. Histroy will mock this nation that militarily engaged one of the biggest oil producers while its ability to supply it's citicizens with affordable energy dwindled simulataneously.

But lets be honest...Americans are letting Big Oil get by with this ...who can blame Exxon for charging what they charge when we pay it ..need it ...and don't take steps to keep some of their profit in our own pockets.

WE CANT CONTROL EXXON ...and for damn sure, the current administration will do nothing against them. What we can do, is limit their effect at every turn. EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DO to conserve a drop of gas is a drop of gas they can't sell you at 3.50 a gallon. THOSE drops add up...everyone needs to do the things that are obvious ...properly inflated tires, easing up on the pedal, combining trips...staying closer to home when you can ...waste as little as you can.

Yes...the pure economics of 3.50 or 4.00 a gallon gas will limit the consumption...people will naturally stay closer to home and conserve as much as possible anyway...but VOW to do MORE. As you might know, the head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts.

Am I Political ? I think I can't help it sometimes ..I have at least one reader who might think it worthy of writing, especially since life has gotten so in the way of this blog that it was back before Al Gore invented the internet that I posted on it.

Speaking of Al ... his hard work sure has paid off to where, I noticed that even when SNL makes FUN of him, the crowd cheers rather than laughs at him. The winner who was not, to the C student who has turned out to be everything that that implies, is being touted by many to be the answer to the "unelectability" of Hillary. I am in the opinion that the red states who were red states will never never never vote for Hillary Clinton ...so she would lose by at least the same margin as Gore. If Florida two elections ago and Ohio in the last election were the tipping points ..think of people you know or who have known from those states and imagine if they as a majority will vote for Hillary or candidate X, Y, or even Z from the Republicans.

And who amongst us thinks the Clintons can make it from here to November 2008 without a major scandal ????

I will be glad to be called wrong on the day after election day, but I just don't see the write on wipe off board on election night going Hillary's way.

And this may be wayyyyy out in left field but I was thinking that the reason that Bush and the Republicans are willing to wipe a little egg off their faces right now with the Health Care bill and actually go AGAINST the majority of Americans in opinion on this issue...is that the issue does ALOT to push HILLARY's model of discussion in the dem race to the forefront ....and something tells me the GOP is just dying to run against her rather than anyone else the Dems will nominate.

Maybe the momentum swing I keep belieiving will come from Edwards who says the right things and has the right charisma is still destined to happen ...or ..hell ..I will be wrong on that too. 8 Years ago we could have had the future nobel peace prize winner or the dishonest rebel without a clue cowboy C student ..and we got as a country what we asked for, not once but twice. I am not sure if Al Gore needs it as bad now ....but he'd sure have been no worse than what we got ...and hey..maybe we wouldnt have those juicy 200 dollar checks we got in the first four years of Bush and those tax rebates ...but we'd probably all have government subsidized computerized thermostats.
